Raphael Varane limped off 23 minutes into his Como debut, which ended with Coppa Italia elimination on penalties to Sampdoria, while Che Adams assisted as Torino beat Cosenza 2-0.

The First Round has already provided a few shocks so far, including the elimination of Serie A sides Venezia, Parma and Verona, while Napoli and Monza needed a penalty shoot-out to secure their progress.

Como took to the field this evening at Marassi, also known as the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, against Andrea Pirlo’s Sampdoria.

Coach Cesc Fabregas gave new signing Varane his debut in the starting XI, but it lasted only 23 minutes before the 31-year-old limped off with a flexor problem in his thigh.

Sampdoria opened the scoring on the counter-attack with Nikolas Ioannou’s angled drive beating Pepe Reina, but seven minutes later Patrick Cutrone was ready to tap in the Gabriel Strefezza assist.

Reina did keep his men in it with a fantastic reaction save on Fabio Borini and Alessio Iovine received a second yellow card deep into stoppages.

It was too late for the score to change and it went to penalties, as there is no extra time at this stage of the Coppa Italia.

Simone Verdi and Matthias Braunoder fired their spot-kicks against the woodwork, while Reina made the save on Melle Meulensteen, but it wasn’t enough.

Sampdoria knock Como out and set up a spectacular Derby della Lanterna against rivals Genoa next month.

Torino had the perfect start to their fixture against Serie B side Cosenza, because in the opening minute Michele Camporese accidentally deflected an Ivan Ilic cross past his own goalkeeper.

Saul Coco’s header flashed just wide and only a desperate Andrea Hristov block prevented an Ilic tap-in, but Vanja Milinkovic-Savic had to fingertip a Tommaso Fumagalli scorcher out from the top corner.

Che Adams came on for his Toro debut at the 65th minute, while Ali Dembele and Samuele Ricci were just off target.

Duvan Zapata made sure of success when left unmarked to meet an Adams cross from six yards.

Torino will play Empoli in the second round of the Coppa Italia.
